The benefits of inclined hoists for roofing and construction projects

Inclined hoists provide many physical and time saving benefits for those working at height on roofing and construction projects.

Working in construction is a physically demanding job. According to figures from the HSE, many construction workers suffer injuries to muscles, bones, joints and nerves that affect their health and ability to work. When working at height, safe handling of construction materials becomes even more critical. Planning how materials are moved and handled from the point of delivery to the point of installation is an important part of any project plan. Here, we explore the benefits of inclined hoists for construction projects.

What is a construction hoist?

In simple terms, a construction hoist is a mechanical system that lifts and moves materials from A to B on a construction site. They are usually used to move materials from one building level to another, for instance from ground level to a higher floor or roof, and back again.

Hoists facilitate the movement of heavy loads in a much safer and more efficient manner than traditional methods such as manual labour or cranes. Different models are designed for different types of loads, capacities, and environments, so it is important to consider the tasks the hoist needs to perform on site to ensure the right one is specified. At Lancastria, we hire three main types of hoists – inclined hoists., ladder hoists and vertical hoists.

This blog is focused on inclined hoists and specifically those produced by Böcker, the world’s leading manufacturers of high-quality, reliable and innovative lifting technology.

You may want to read our previous blog about the benefits of vertical hoists too.

What is an inclined hoist?

An inclined hoist transports materials and equipment along an inclined path, typically at a construction site. Böcker inclined hoists ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transport of loads up to 24m or 7 storeys, making them ideal for roofing contractors, general building contractors and solar panel installers. Their hydraulically powered hoisting mechanism is mounted on a track system that is set at an angle, enabling the quick and easy movement of loads up and down the slope. This and their easy of manoeuvrability makes Böcker inclined hoists particularly useful on sites where access or space is limited.

What are the benefits of an Böcker inclined hoist?

  • Easy to install.

Unlike vertical hoists, which are designed to move materials, people and equipment up and down the sides of buildings and are usually fixed to scaffolding, inclined hoists offer a safe, standalone trailer-mounted solution for moving materials to height. They can also be easily moved around the site as a project progresses. Our compact vertical hoist, the Böcker Junior, is small enough to fit through any standard door with a shunting width of less than 890 mm, making it extra versatile!

  • Easy to operate

Our Böcker inclined hoists are easy to operate, without the need for technical training (although our qualified engineers do provide on site familiarisation guidance on our hoists, just to make sure). A simple hydraulically powered winch extends and retracts the ladders to the desired height, whilst another winch raises and lowers the carriage during its operation.

  • Versatile for different applications

Inclined hoists can be used to move a wide range of materials, including roofing materials, bulk materials, solar panels and roofing waste too. The highly popular tipping carriage on Böcker hoists allows easy access to the platform without compromising the edge protection. Inclined hoists can also be adjusted to different slopes and heights, making them suitable for various construction site topographies.

  • Safe and efficient

Inclined hoists can move materials quickly and continuously, reducing downtime and accelerating project timelines. They also reduce the risk of injuries associated with manual lifting and carrying.

  • Hoists for low noise or low emissions environments

Inclined hoists typically produce less noise and fewer emissions than the alternative solutions, contributing to a safer and more comfortable working environment. Our range of inclined Böcker hoists are available as hybrid and all-electric versions, making them ideal for use in environments that require low-emissions, quiet operation, or confined spaces.

Why hire your inclined hoists from Lancastria?

Lancastria is a leading specialist supplier of materials, tools and specialist access equipment to commercial flat roofing contractors across the UK – and the UK’s leading hirer of Böcker Inclined Hoists. Our range includes the Böcker Simply Inclined Hoist, the Böcker Junior and the sectional Ladder hoists.

An all-rounder for transporting roofing and construction material safely and efficiently, the Böcker Simply boasts an extremely low space requirement, simple assembly, ease of operation, and high manoeuvrability. It can reach a max height of 20m and has a carriage speed 28m/min, with a low clearance height and a working radius of 360 degrees.

Despite its name, the Böcker Junior also offers huge gains from a compact machine. With a height range of up to 24m, and carriage speeds of up to 48 m/min, it is the ideal choice for transporting materials to height in narrow and confined construction sites.

Every hoist is serviced and safety checked between hires, assuring you of a safe, compliant and fully operational equipment hire. Our qualified and friendly team of engineers provide on site familiarisation guidance on our hoists, ensuring your operatives understand how to use the hoist safely and efficiently. We also offer an onsite repair service in the unlikely event of breakdown.
