Safe2Torch Guidance for flat roofers

What is the Safe2Torch guidance for flat roofers?

The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) is the largest and most influential roofing trade association in the UK, with a focus on ensuring high standards of workmanship and sound business practice across the roofing industry.

In April this year, the association updated its Safe2Torch guidance to add focus to removing the risk of fire at the design stage and the importance of this being risk assessed based on site conditions.

As suppliers of waterproofing systems and gas torches to the sector, we wholeheartedly support any safety initiatives across our sector. Here, we explore key learnings from the Safe2Torch guidance.

What is the Safe2Torch Guidance?

The ‘Safe to Torch’ campaign and guidance aims to reduce the risk of roof fires when using gas torches, either to dry out roofs or when used to install torch-on membranes. It also supports compliance with both the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015, and the Health and Safety Executive’s ‘Helping Great Britain Work Well’ strategy.

Why should roofing contractors take note?

According to the NFRC, the Safe2Torch campaign directly affects at least 50% of all the flat roofs installed in the UK. Roof fires caused by gas torches, no matter how minor, can pose a serious threat to people and buildings. The NFRC believes that by working with suppliers and contracts to implement guidance, fires can be prevented and safe practices for torch on application encouraged.

What are the main take-aways from Safe2Torch?

  • Prioritise risk assessments

The guidance makes it clear that risk assessments should take place before any work is started. This includes identifying potential fire hazards, such as combustible materials or structures, that could be affected by the use of a gas torch.

  • Ongoing vigilance is key

A risk assessment should not be a tick-box, check-and-forget exercise. Contractors should ensure their teams have access to fire extinguishers, blankets or other fire safety equipment on site. The work area should also be monitored for potential fire hazards during and after torch application.

  • Avoid taking risks

Where torch-on applications pose a risk, there are industry accepted alternatives using cold-applied roofing systems or other methods that do not involve an open flame.  At Lancastria we can advise on the best alternatives and supply the required materials from our extensive waterproofing range.

  • Ensure the workforce is competent

Ensure everyone using the equipment is adequately trained and competent in the use of the torch equipment and safety procedures.

  • Prep your work area

Clear the work area of any combustible materials that could ignite from exposure to a torch flame and use protective coverings and barriers to shield nearby objects and buildings from potential fire hazards.

How can I make sure that I comply?

The NFRC has provided guidance, a checklist, and a Safe Systems of Work documentation. Using this information can help designers and contractors ensure that all safety measures are addressed and documented before starting torch-on work.

Where can I find more information about the Safe2Torch campaign?

Information can be found at https://www.nfrc.co.uk/media-centre/campaigns/safe2torch and includes:

  • Safe2Torch Guidance: The purpose of this guidance document is to promote Safe2Torch specification writing at the initial survey and design stage and a safe system of work when using propane gas torches for the application of roofing membranes and the drying of roof surfaces for all flat roofing applications.
  • Safe2Torch Checklist: A simple checklist that highlights key areas of concern that should be addressed as part of the risk assessment process.
  • Safe2Torch Visual Checklist: A visual version of the above checklist, which uses photographs and illustration to support the key points.
  • Safe2Torch Safe System of Works for Gas Torches: A safe system of work (SSW) document which provides guidance for the safe installation of torch-on reinforced bitumen membranes and use of gas torches in the workplace.
