BACKGROUND TO THE PROJECT

The Muriel Stott Centre is a library located at the University of Manchester. The flat roofing works were part of a larger redevelopment project designed to ensure the building and its library facilities meet the University’s Imagine2030 vision of creating world-leading environments for research, learning and student development.

THE CHALLENGE

The flat roofing refurbishment and the wider redevelopment project had to be completed in the short 6-week summer break period. This meant the contractor had to operate round other trades and activities taking place as part of the overall programme of works.

Before the roofing work could be undertaken, redundant M&E on the roof area had to be dismantled and removed, and new decking installed to fill the void.

PROJECT SOLUTION

Lancastria worked closely with LRL Roofing Solutions to provide a detailed specification for a new PU liquid coating using our BBA Certified System THX. The THX System has a wet-on-wet application, meaning that it could be installed quickly and efficiently, helping the contractor meet the strict deadlines they were working to.

SCOPE OF WORK

Surface Preparation:

• Pressure washing and mechanical brushing to remove dirt, loose gravel, and contaminants.
• Spot repairs to damaged areas using compatible patching material.

Primer Application:

• Application of a compatible Lancastria primer to enhance adhesion.

Liquid Membrane Application:

• Application of two coats of SYSTEM THX polyurethane liquid membrane with full reinforcement.
• Final SYSTEM THX+ topcoat applied with a light grey finish for increased reflectivity.
• Walkways installed for maintenance.

 

THE OUTCOME

The project was completed on time, thanks to the rapid application benefits of SYSTEM THX, including the wet-on-wet application, the requirement for minimal mixing and the ability to apply it to vertical surfaces and upstands without slumping.

And with the combined use of System THX and System THX+ topcoat we were able to provide a Lancastria 20-year guarantee, for added peace of mind.
